Today, Brian Austin of The Daily Tarheel crafted a sad work of journalism titled “Rivalry goes off football field”. Here’s the best part of the entire article (emphasis added):
Members of the Marching Tar Heels band said N.C. State fans were rude, harassing them with boos and obscene language.
“I was just really disappointed in their fans,” said Ivey Locklear a sophomore member of the Marching Tar Heels. “They were all caught up in the rivalry, so we weren’t sure what they would do.”
Dear whiny lil tarholette, that is what happens when you have a sold out game and the fans care! You’re damn right we booed you, and you better believe we recognize the rivalry. Look, I don’t hate any many of you as individuals, but as an organization or team, you’d better prepare for the thunder. If you can’t handle this, well, let’s just say you chose the right school.
Is anyone really surprised by this? They lose, they complain. We’re too young! You’re too mean! Whaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Sure it was a little much to boo them, but in a way they bring crap on themselves — stuff like playing when the opposition’s QB is under center, for example. I was wondering why the Tar Heel band didn’t get off of the sideline after they played.
It’s not amusing, however, that they insinuate that State fans would “do something” to them. Sorry bub, but no one was contemplating “doing anything” other than giving you a hard time.
But here’s a clue for all the would be UNC Scooby Doo’s: not everyone loves you. And not everyone thinks you’re all that. Just because Mommy and Daddy and Ole Roy said you are don’t think we think it.

i thought the comoraderie(sp?) was great in there on Staurday, we sit in lifetime and i saw heels fan sitting with state fans right in our section(they had obviously come together) and saw no signs of ill will. it is a rivalry. and its not like state fans are treated like royalty at duke or UNC-CH basketball games. that is the environment you strive for as a university and a fottball team. what did they want, for me to sit in their seat to warm it up for them? a breath mint?

R-I-V-A-L-R-Y GAME!!
I was in sec. 24 and there were two elderly gentlemen in front of me. One was a Carolina fan and the other a State fan. They both jabbed each other after their team did something good. The funniest thing was the elder State fan was wearing a state tie. He said he was wearing it to prove to his “rival” that people from state do know how to wear and tie a tie. I thought that was pretty cool and that is how the rivalry should be.
Sounds like the members of the marching tar holes and younger generations of uncx fan have been a bit spoiled by the prowess of their athletic teams. Rivalries are fueled by the ability of either team to win on any given day and having a good natured “hatred” of the other team.

One other quick note, Struttin’ — I’ve re-engineered my site and have added a long overdue link to you over there. Also, good work on developing your blog out. It’s become a daily read when I make my Wolfpack rounds. Keep it up!

The article says that boos and obscene language were directed at the tarhole band. This is pretty tame stuff.
