Today is for Kay

February 10, 2008

First of all, I’ve been watching the Lady Wolfpack take on the, umm, Lady Eagles? I have the volume down so I’m not really sure what the Boston College women are referred to as. The opening moments of the first half did not look to well. I had that feeling of “no, not today!” of all days. Well, the Lady Wolfpack have ruled the second half and are currently leading 58-41, domination. What more could we fans of the Pack ask for today? Oh yeah, I know, Go Clempsun! Beat dem Heels!

Ok, back to the meaning of this day, February 10, 2008…

What’s the big deal with this Sunday afternoon? It’s more or less a “dress rehearsal” for coverage of the NCAA Tournament.

Today, ESPN2 is showing eight regional games within two telecast windows (2 p.m. ET and 4:30 pm ET). The day allows ESPN to hone the production coordination between game crews and the studio needed to air the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. But this month’s Frenzy will feature something new — and it comes in pink. Teams such as NC State, Rutgers, Georgia and LSU are expected to wear pink uniforms, shoelaces or shooting shirts to help promote breast cancer awareness and encourage fans to contribute to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research, in collaboration with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), launched the initiative in early December. It honors NC State women’s coach Kay Yow, who worked alongside Jim Valvano at NC State before he succumbed to cancer in 1993. Yow, who has more than 700 coaching victories, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and learned in November she has stage-four cancer. (more…)

Washington Slime (Updated @ 1500hrs)

February 9, 2008

I read a pretty ridiculous and biased post this morning on the Washington Times web site. My views are biased, but they are on a site that makes notice of any bias I might show. You would assume an article under the jurisdiction of “Washington Times” would be neutral. Here is that article in it’s entirety (fair and balanced!):

It’s always amusing to me how much ACC football coaches try to hype their league into something far, far greater than it is.

Look at all those bowl teams! Look at all those programs who have contended for division titles! Anybody can beat anybody! Blah, blah, blah. (more…)

Wildkitties slayed by Bulldawgs

November 8, 2007

The Gardner-Webb University (Runnin) Bulldogs upset #20 Kentucky tonight.

GWU outscored UK in both halves.

GWU shot 52% from the floor, UK 36%.

I spent my first 2 years of college at GWU, I don’t really care that much that they won though. I am, however, finding great pleasure in a top 20 team losing.

Also of note tonight, UConn beat Morgan State… by 4!

Pack fans do it again

November 6, 2007

So, there’s an interactive Top 25 basketball poll on ESPN.com today. In usual State fashion, we swayed the voting in our favour. As of 3:05pm, we are atop the “Which of these preseason Top 25 teams will win the national championship?” poll with a whopping 50.9% of the 143,039 total votes.

On that same page, at the top, you will also notice NC State voted to win the ACC with 53.2% of the vote. Ha ha.

You gotta see this video

October 29, 2007

Trinity University of San Antonio, a Division III school, won on the final play against Millsaps, by using 15 “laterals” to run down the field for a touchdown. This video is pretty amazing, although it’s hard to beat the last second play by Cal to beat Stanford in 1982, when Stanford’s band was marching onto the field and one of the members got knocked over. Still got to love Division III football. And the announcers started screaming just at the right moment.
