Ummmm, do we suck that bad?

December 9, 2007

I’m not going to write on the historical loss to ECU.

It’s mid-Sunday afternoon.
I see Mario Williams had a sack for a 13 yard loss in Houston’s win over Tampa Bay.
I can’t see the Chargers game up here in NY, but Rivers just threw a TD to tie the game under 10 seconds.
Torry Holt had 8 catches for 90 yards.
John McCargo had 1 tackle and 2 assists for Buffalo.

Anyways, I hope everyone is enjoying Sunday afternoon.

Good thing he didn’t choose baseball

October 17, 2007

Because he’d have at least 2 strikes right? Of course I’m talking about the pride of NC State, Koren Robinson!! No? Sorry, I meant thorn. Koren posted awesome number playing WR at NC State, was picked #9 overall by Seattle in the NFL draft, then had some great years at Seattle. In just his second NFL season he had 78 receptions for 1240 yards and 5 TDs.

Somewhere during his stay at Seattle he got a DUI, I just can’t remember when. I do remember he was on probation by the NFL, and then last August this headline popped up, “Vikings’ Robinson charged with DWI, felony fleeing”. Not good.

Well, now signed by the Green Bay Packers, Koren was reinstated today by commish Roger Goodell. Word is, Koren will be suitd up Sunday, and might see some time on the field. I hope this is another Josh Hamilton like story, and not a Ricky Williams one.

Mario watch

September 14, 2007

Just got around to thumbing through the most recent Sports Illustrated.
Page 21, “Who’s Hot, Who’s Not”. Mario Williams is Hot, that’s who.

———-
Also note, on what seems to be page 28 (seems like it’s rare to see an actual page number anymore), a nice write up on Greensboro native John Isner. Remember, when I told you to watch the US Open a few weeks ago? That’s him.

Ok, I can’t help it

September 10, 2007

Mario Williams is getting a lot man-crushes on ESPN this afternoon. Merril Hodge and Jay Mariotti in particular are lauding him for his performance yesterday. Working at home is great! (I get to listen to ESPN the tv channel while working)

As frustrating as NC State has been, I get almost as great a rush from seeing Mario and Philip succeed.
Be sure to watch Arizona tonight guys! Adrian Wilson and Terrence Holt are the starting safeties. And, let’s not forget, on the other side, for SF is Marcus Hudson (backup CB) and Manny Lawson (starting LOLB).

As I was writing this, Tony Kornheiser (did I spell that right) gave Mario some props.

Ok, while I’m rambling, I love the commercial (I don’t’ even remember what it was for, the NFL?) of Merriman and LT playing to the music from Bravehart. Freedom!!!! (not sure what it has to do with football)

Pack on the Prowl in Arizona

September 3, 2007

Terrence Holt was picked up by the Arizona Cardinals to give some experience and depth to the Free Safety position. Recently he was named the starter, and will be roaming the secondary with former State teammate All-Pro Adrian Wilson. So be sure to tune in when the Cards are on tv and support our guys.

Will Manny Lawson have coming out party this year?

August 27, 2007

Second-year pro Manny Lawson is positioning himself to be an all-around player for the team this season at the strong outside linebacker spot. Manny says, “I want to be well-rounded – rushes, drops, all in one. I was blessed with this athletic talent. I’m in position now where I can showcase it. Oh, man, I can’t wait.”

Says Scot McCloughan, the 49ers’ vice president of player personnel: “He’s a quality individual. When we interviewed him, it was always ‘Yes, sir,’ ‘No, sir.’ You could tell he was raised right. He understands the chain of command. A lot of kids these days don’t.”

On the football side of things, McCloughan saw a 6-foot-5, 240-pound player with skills that would translate to an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, which the 49ers planned to install in 2007. The 49ers primarily ran a 4-3 last season.

“He wasn’t big enough to be a defensive end,” McCloughan said. “First and foremost, it was his play speed. His intangibles are phenomenal – work ethic, passion, intelligence. He’s the type of player with the skills to be really, really good. If they don’t pan out, with his intangibles, he’s still going to be a solid player. He has a very unique physical ability, which is his play speed.”

An example of that came in the second preseason game against the Raiders. One of Lawson’s two solo tackles Saturday night came on a 1st-and-10 play at the Oakland 42-yard line in the first quarter. He read run immediately and nailed running back Dominic Rhodes for a 6-yard loss. A player with less explosive speed would not make that play, at least not for that big a loss.

Lawson started 11 games as a rookie and had 42 solo tackles, 21/2 sacks, two fumble recoveries, a blocked punt and the one interception.

Somewhat plagerized from this article. Go read the whole thing if you want!
